Put a Stop to the Puppy Biting

Posted by Post in Home.

Have you been avoiding play with your puppy because of those sharp little teeth (and the contact that they make with your hands, arms, legs, ankles, and toes)? Have you been wearing long sleeves to work in July to hide suspicious-looking puncture marks on your arms? Though puppy biting is normal, and will generally curb as your dog grows, ignoring the problem isn?t going to remedy it. http://www.agirlandherdogs.com/209/its-snowing-wait-snow-inside-my-house/

If your puppy was to remain in her canine pack, she would learn the difference between play biting and deadly biting from her litter mates. Painful bites would send her playmates away with a yelp. Since no puppy likes to be alone, she would quickly learn that too-rough biting ends playtime.

But she is no longer part of her canine pack. Now it?s up to you to teach her that biting is not acceptable.

Remember that your puppy needs her mouth like you need your hands. She uses it to explore, feel, and pick things up. While children use their hands to play with one another, puppies use their mouths to play with one another. If you use wide hands to play roughly with your puppy, grabbing at her muzzle or fur in jest, she may view them as jaws and join in the play with her own mouth. Instead, use toys that she can clamp down on, and reserve your hands for care-giving (offering of treats and toys, feeding, petting).

Chase is not a good game to teach a puppy. Dogs instinctively chase what? You?ve got it ? prey. Do you want to be viewed as prey? Not likely.

Also make sure that your puppy is getting enough quality exercise (walking, running, fetching, swimming) in a day to tire her out. A tired puppy is a good puppy.
